This desk calendar is composed of selected visuals and copy from the advertising series “Sound / Parts” for Prima Yanagisawa Saxophones, placed in music magazines by Prima Gakki between 2012 and 2015.
Following a period in which advertising focused on the presence of the finished instrument, and the factory-based series “Hands Create Sound.” developed through close on-site research, this series shifted its attention to the individual parts that together form a saxophone.
Using the motif “◯音 (sound),” a single expression formed with two kanji characters, the advertisements explored the role and character of each part, and the expressions of sound that emerge when they come together.
(The Japanese expression “○音” is intentionally left untranslated, with “sound” provided only as a guide to its meaning.)
Moving back and forth between part and whole, this calendar invites you to sense the process by which sound is shaped, and the ideas of sound-making that belong to this particular period.
