江戸時代の画家。「奇想の絵師」と呼ばれる。
ニワトリや小鳥、花など身近な被写体への観察眼や大胆な構図が特徴。
特にニワトリの描写は鬼気迫るものがある。
キャラクター性やデザイン性の高い作品も残している。
超絶した技巧や奇抜な構成が注目を浴び、1990年以降人気が爆発した。
