三葉虫(trilobite)のイラストです。
三葉虫は古生代カンブリア紀〜ペルム紀末の約2億7000万年の期間に大繁栄し、今は絶滅した節足動物の一種です。
オルドビス紀中期のロシア近海に生息していたアサフス・コワレウスキー(Neoasaphus kowalewskii)は複眼が飛び出した構造をしていました。天敵から逃れる為、海底の泥に埋まって目だけを突き出していたと考えられています。
デボン紀の浅海に広く生息していたファコプス(Phacops sp.)は視力を発達させる進化の過程で、現代の昆虫のような複眼を持つようになりました。しかし昆虫の複眼と違い、方解石でできていたと考えられています。
三葉虫は天敵に襲われた際、団子虫の様に丸まった防御体勢を取ることができ、これをエンロールと呼びます。
エンロール状態の三葉虫化石はモロッコ等で大量に産出します。
