羽黒山（山形県にある山岳信仰の中心地）の山伏が、葛城山（奈良・大阪の境にある山）につくと、雪がふってきました。
山伏は吹雪にこまって、ちょうど行き合った里の女に一夜の宿をたのみます。
夜の勤行（ごんぎょう＝読経や回向をすること）を始めようとすると、里の女が、わたしは三熱の苦しみをうけているので助けてほしい、と言います。

実は里の女は葛城山の神でした。
役行者（えんのぎょうじゃ＝修験道の開祖とされる）に、仏法のため山に岩橋をかけるように命じられたのですが、女神は顔が醜いのが恥ずかしくて、夜しか作業をしなかったのです。
そのため岩橋はちっとも完成せず、女神は役行者に蔦葛（つたかずら）で縛られてしまったのでした。
山伏が祈ると葛城山の神があらわれますが、やはり顔が醜いと気にして、夜明け前に岩戸のなかに隠れてしまいました。

葛城の神はどうしても顔を見られたくないようです。それならば、夜間工事で繊細な女神をてつだおう!!　
山の間にみごと岩橋をかけることができれば、極楽への道があらわれるかも？
