19世紀のヨーロッパで熱狂的に愛好された、華やかな色彩とグロテスクとも言える独特の形態をもつ熱帯の蘭を100種類紹介した図鑑「蘭科百選/A Century of Orchidaceous Plants」第2巻収録の図版です。

図版を手掛けた植物画家ウォルター・フッド・フィッチ(1817-1892)は、およそ40年に渡って「カーチス・ボタニカル・マガジン」のために膨大な植物画を描いた、19世紀イギリスを代表するボタニカル・アーティスト。
蘭の複雑な構造を正確に描き切った色鮮やかな手彩色石版図を多数収録した本書は、植物図譜の名品としてきわめて評価の高い、ウォルター・フィッチの代表作です。
