About this design

精巧で美しい衣装を銀製の香炉にかざし、アンバーグリス（龍涎香りゅうぜんこう）の煙を吸い込んでいる女性の姿。アラビア人から特に愛された香りであり、アラビアンナイトとしても知られる「千夜一夜物語」にも登場するアンバーグリスは、マッコウクジラから抽出される楼状の結石であると考えられています。

サージェントはこの絵を、タンジール（モロッコ）の借家のパティオでモデルにポーズをとらせて描き始め、パリのアトリエで完成させました。北アフリカのさまざまな地域から取り入れた衣装や背景の細部は、異なる色調の白と白とが輝きを放ち、美しい陰影と幻想的な雰囲気を醸し出しています。
