古来からその縁起の良さや美しさから、様々な絵画や建築物のモチーフとしても多用されています。
仏教における龍とは？
龍とは、おもに海や池などの水中に住し、雨や雲をつかさどり、古来よりインドでは、暴風雨をもたらすものとして、恐れられると同時に、また恵みの雨をもたらすものとして信仰もされた。仏教においても、龍は初期の仏典をはじめ大乗経典、密教経典など多くの経典に登場し、仏教の守護者などとして描かれている。
中国では皇帝の象徴が龍であるのに対し、鳳凰は皇后の象徴とされました。鳳凰は鳳がオスで風がメスの鳥です。名君が現れたときに姿を現し、「相飛び相鳴けば天下泰平の世が訪れる」といわれたことから、皇后の象徴となったと伝えられています。
