シャッターユニットはスクエア型のセイコーMFCを採用。
電池消耗時の非常用として、1/90秒のみの機械式シャッターも備えている。
ニコンとしては初のエントリーモデルで、同時期に低廉で小型軽量の交換レンズ「ニコンレンズシリーズE」もリリースされた。
外装デザインはジョルジェット・ジウジアーロにより、ニコンF3と同時になされている。
