About this design

紀勢本線は、亀山駅 - 新宮(しんぐう)駅間を東海旅客鉄道、新宮駅 - 和歌山市駅間を西日本旅客鉄道運営している路線です。新宮駅はその境目にあり、元は新宮鉄道という私鉄が走っておりましたが、1934年に国有化されました。

写真は1970年頃の撮影ですが、詳しい事は分かりません。
でも、煙突の部分を見ると集煙装置がついていますので、この装置が考案された1951年行以降の撮影である事は自明ですね。集煙装置は煙の流れを誘導する部品で、上部に蓋があり、トンネルなどを通過する際にこの蓋を閉じて煙の流れを変え、煙が車体にまとわりついたり運転室などに入り込むのを防ぐ物です。

昨今走っている観光目的の蒸気機関車では、あまり見ない装置ですが・・・・・後ろから他の機関車で押してるからかな?（苦笑）
まあ、周辺の環境に配慮して、煙は少なめの運転ですし、そもそも高齢の機関車達ですから、本気出して走るわけに行きませんよね。
