東京都の路面電車は、1903年(明治36年)に東京馬車鉄道が電化され、当初は3社ほどの私鉄が開業したのですが、その後統合され東京電車鉄道となりました。更にそれを1911年に東京市が買い上げて、東京市電になりまして、1943年に東京都制施行にともない、都電と名を変えました。
初代の路面電車は1形車両と呼ばれますが、この写真はその2代目あたりの、ヴェスチビュル付きというやつではないかと思います。全長約7.6メートル、二段窓に吹きさらしのオープンデッキを持つ木造四輪単車というのが、当時の典型的なスタイルだそうです。
定員は40人ですが、大正時代からそうとう混んでいたとか、、、、 日本の満員電車の歴史は長いですね。(-_-;)
