About this design

マハトマ・ガンディー（＝マハートマー・ガーンディー）ことモーハンダース・カラムチャンド・ガーンディー(1869年10月2日 - 1948年1月30日）

インドのグジャラート出身でユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンで学んだのち弁護士となった、宗教家、政治指導者である。

インド独立の父。「マハートマー（महात्मा）」とは「偉大なる魂」という意味で、インドの詩聖タゴールから贈られたとされるガンディーの尊称である。

また、インドでは親しみをこめて「バープー」（बापू：「父親」の意味）とも呼ばれている。

1937年から1948年にかけて、計5回ノーベル平和賞の候補になったが、受賞には至っていない。

ガンディーの誕生日にちなみ、インドで毎年10月2日は「ガンディー記念日」（गांधी जयंती、ガーンディー・ジャヤンティー）という国民の休日となっている。

2007年6月の国連総会では、この日を国際非暴力デーという国際デーとすることが決議された。
