■孤児オリヴァー・ツイストはお粥のお代わりを求めたために孤児院を追い出され、ユダヤ人フェイギンを頭領とする少年たちの窃盗団に引きずり込まれてしまう。
裕福で心優しい紳士ブラウンローに保護され、その純粋な心を励まされたが、ふたたびフェイギンやその仲間のサイクスの元に戻されてしまう。
孤児オリヴァーが様々な困苦にもめげずに立派に成長するまでを描く。
ディケンズの出世作である。
