旧ソ連で活動していたテクノポップグループ。
同じ理髪店を利用していた三人の若者により結成。その縁あって、ラテン語で床屋を意味するtonsorをグループ名に冠した。
初期tonsorにおいて、実質的プロデューサーとしての役割を担っていたのは彼らが通っていた床屋の親父である。
親父はクラフトワークマニアで、メンバーに自作のシンセサイザーを与え、さらには楽曲制作にも大きく関わっていた。
床屋の親父の指導のもと発表した1stはそこそこのセールスを記録。2ndでは床屋の親父が正式なプロデューサーとして辣腕をふるい、大ヒットを飛ばす。tonsorはテクノポップの寵児としてスターダムの階段を駆け上がっていった。
しかし、次第に両者間で方向性にズレが生じるようになっていく。テクノ至上主義の床屋の親父と、テクノに拘る必要はないと考えるメンバーで意見が対立したのだ。
それは修復不可能な大きな溝となり、遂にメンバーは床屋の親父に絶縁状を叩きつけるまでに至る。
以降の彼らはスタジオに外部の人間を寄せ付けず、メンバーだけで新しいアルバムの制作に取り掛かることとなった。
そうしたなかで作られた三枚目のアルバムで彼らは大きな変化を見せる。それまでのテクノカットをドレッドヘアーにし、全曲レゲエの問題作を発表したのだ。これにはファンも面食らい、セールス的にも評価的にも散々であった。
アルバム発表後のツアーに出たtonsorは行く先々でブーイングの嵐に見舞われた。初期のテクノ曲を一切演奏しなかったためだ。
そして、ツアー最終日に突然の解散発表。
ラストライブにアンコールはなく、飛び交う観衆の怒号に向かって彼らはこう言い放った。
「床屋で自分がイメージしていた髪型にならなかったときの気分はどうだい？」
