先日、クロマグロとビンナガのアクリルキーホルダーを作りました。（別のとこで販売中！）
ヒレの数や尾鰭の付け根の突起などを間違えないように、
私の好きな、ズーンとした、けどそれがかわいいような表情を表現できるように、
何度も描き直してようやく形になったマグロキーホルダー。
真っ直ぐ泳いでる時は上下のヒレをしまっていて、その形が可愛いことを伝えたくて、ヒレをたたんでいる状態と立てている状態で２種類の絵柄を用意しました。
普段野鳥グッズばかり作っているので、久しぶりに真新しいものを作れたな！という達成感もあり、マグロ屋で働いている父に意気揚々と見せびらかしました。
反応は想定外で、開口一番に一言「おしりの模様は描かないの？」と言われました。
「おしりの模様」？マグロにそのようなキュートな特徴、聞いたことがありません。
私が画像検索で見つけたり、葛西臨海水族園で様々な距離や角度から観察したクロマグロたちのお尻は、みんなツルツルのスベスベなメタリックシルバーのはずです。
でも父はマグロ屋で働いていて、毎日マグロのおしりを眺めています。
たまに水槽の外から眺めるだけの私と比べたら、説得力が違います。
でもでも、私が今まで撮った水族館のマグロたちは、どこからどうみても模様なんてありませんでした。
悩むうちにひとつ思い出しました。
「カツオちゃんはお腹の模様が変わる！」と図解するさかなクンのイラストを見たことがあります。
カツオは、海で泳いでる時と、釣り上げられた時と、死んで市場に並んでる時でお腹の模様が違うんだそうです。
カツオがそうならマグロもそうかもしれないと思いました。
しかし、いくら調べても「マグロは死ぬとおしりに模様が出る」という確証を得られませんでした。
死んだマグロを毎日見ている父と、水槽の中の生きたマグロしか見たことがない私の論争(そこまでしてない)に決着がつきませんでした。
これ以上のマグロに関する知見を得るには、水族館の人に直接質問してみるしかないところまできてしまったと思いました。
私は電話が苦手なので腰が重かったし、それを聞くためだけに水族館に行って飼育員さんを呼び出すことってできるかなと少しうだうだしました。
ところが、このうだうだは全くの杞憂に終わりました。
葛西臨海水族園は10月10日が開園記念日で、10月10日はマグロの日で、私がこれに悩んでいたのはちょうど10月頭だったのです。
自分がマグログッズを作って、マグロについて新たな疑問が生まれて、もっと知りたいとなった時に、マグロについて知る機会がこれほどまでに盛大に用意されているなんて…私は最高恵まれ人間です。
ひとつだけ惜しかったのは、、水族館のマグロイベントの期間中、私はイベント出展で京都に遠征に出ていて、全日程を楽しむことができませんでした。
それでも、マグロのおしりの秘密を明らかにすべく、夜行バスでヘニョヘニョになった身体を引きずって水族館へ向かいました。
マグロは人気者すぎて、イベントは大盛況で、クイズ大会も抽選も全部外してしまいましたが、トークイベントの最後、お話をされていた飼育員さんが「他にも聞きたいことがある人はぜひこの後でも質問に来てください」と言ってくださいました。その言葉を待っていました。速攻質問に行きました。
死んだマグロのおしりの模様についてなんて、大勢のお客さんの前で聞いたら「なにそのマグロのこと一通り知ってるけどおしりだけは知らないみたいな質問？」とか思われてしまうかな、と勝手に想像して緊張していたので、個別に質問できる時間があって本当に良かったです。
そんなこんなでようやく飼育員さんに教えていただけました。
マグロは死ぬとお尻に模様が出るそうです。種類によって模様は違うようです。生きてる時実は紺色の背中は、死ぬと黒くなるそうです。
ほ……………
知りたいことを知るために行動した充実感を久しぶりに味わいました。
そして、折角ここまでしたのだから、死んだマグロに模様があることが伝わるアイテムも作らなければ！となり、この絵が誕生しました。
私のグッズ作りの根本には「自分がこれの魅力を知った時のときめきや感動を追体験してくれ！」という思いがあります。
マグロ経験はまだまだ浅いですが、どんどん新しいことに興味を持ちながらより奥の深いいきものグッズを作っていけたらなと思います。
ちなみに、「マグロのおしり問題」が解決したあと、
同じ時期に新しく得た「若いマグロはお腹に模様がある」という知見から、「若いマグロのお腹の模様は死んでる時なのか生きてる時なのか私にははっきりわからない問題」が浮上しました。
１件だけ、お腹に模様のある小さめのマグロが泳いでいる画像を見つけられたので、生きてる時から模様があるんだろうな、と思っています。
でも、もっともっと小さい、稚魚くらいのマグロでお腹に模様のある写真を見たことがないので、そこらへんの発生段階による形態の違いとかもっと知りたいなと思いました。
マグロの本とか、あることだけ知っていて全然読めていないので、本当に浅い知識で好き好き言ってるだけだけど、
素人なりに、オナガと同じくらいは知ってる生きものになりたい。それくらいマグロのこと好きです。
