About this design

デボン紀に生きた板皮類という軟骨魚類のなかま。エイに似ているが近縁ではなく、エイが生まれるよりも前にエイの形質を獲得し、エイが現れる前に絶滅した、いっていみれば「時代がおれに追いつかなかった」系の古生物である。板皮類は通常頭部を中心に堅い骨質のプレートで覆われているが反面下半身はやわらかい身体に軟骨の骨組みしかもっていないため化石で出土するのは上半身のみなのだが、ゲムエンディナは全身をこまかい硬い甲皮のチップのようなもので覆われており、おかげで全身の化石が出土している。
