About this design

与論島とは
奄美群島の内で最も沖縄県に近い位置にあり、南方約22kmには沖縄本島最北端の辺戸岬（へどみさき）があり、西には伊是名島と伊平屋島が望める。島の周囲は珊瑚礁で囲まれており、美しいサンゴ礁の島である。礁の内側は水深2 - 3mの浅い海が広がる。隆起作用と造礁作用による石灰岩でできた島である。
一島一町で、鹿児島県大島郡与論町。人口は約5,000人で、主な産業は農業と観光業である。1984年7月15日にはミニ独立国、「パナウル王国」を設立した。「パナ」は花、「ウル」はサンゴ礁を意味している。
島で唯一製造されている酒は黒糖焼酎で、代表銘柄の「有泉」（島有泉）は、ほとんどが島で消費されている。客人をもてなす時などには「与論献奉」と呼ばれる島流の飲み方で飲まれている。

名称
「よろんとう」ともよばれるが、これは1970年代に観光振興の目的で外国風に「ヨロン島」と表記して読ませたもので、旧来の読み方は「よろんじま」。「与論」は琉球方言で「ユンヌ」と呼ばれていたものが変化したもの。
