2018年は北海道命名から150年になります。
松浦武四郎は、1818（文政元）年に伊勢国須川村（現在の三重県松阪市小野江町）に生まれ、17歳から10年間で日本各地をまわります。
武四郎は、26歳の時にロシアが蝦夷地支配を狙っているということを耳にし、当時まだあまり知られていなかった、蝦夷地の様子を人々に知らせようと調査を決意したそうです。
道北・音威子府村に、北海道の聖地ともいえる「北海道命名之地」があります。
名付け親は、幕末の探検家・松浦武四郎。6回にわたって蝦夷地を調査し、地図や地名、人々の暮らしを江戸に伝えた人物です。
武四郎は1857年（安政４）年に、天塩川河口から源流部付近を24日間かけて調査。その途中、アイヌコタン長老アエトモから、「北海道」命名のきっかけとなる話を聞きます。
「この地に生まれた者を（カイ）と呼ぶ」1869（明治2）年、政府から蝦夷地開拓御用係に任命され、蝦夷地にかわる新しい名称「北加伊道」を政府に提示。後に「加伊」が「海」となり、「北海道」の名が誕生したとされています。
