織田信長は、永禄8年（1565年）9月頃から文書に麟（りん）の字をかたどった花押を使用するようになった。
この花押は伝説上の生物である「麒麟」を意味するとされるが、麒麟は正しい政治が行われている世にしか現れない生物であると中世日本では信じられていた。そして、この「麟」字型花押が使われはじめるきっかけとなったのは、室町幕府将軍・足利義輝の非業の死（永禄の政変）であった。このような背景から、この花押は平和社会の実現を目指した信長の理想を示すものだと解釈されている。
上の解釈は定説となり、織田信長に関する多くの論文で注目されてきた。しかし、同説には様々な異論も存在し、例えば、「麟」の字ではなく「信長」の字を表しているとする説、あるいは足利様の花押との連続性があるとする説、平和社会実現の主体を信長自身ではなく足利義昭とみる説などがある。
"織田 信長（おだ のぶなが、1534年6月23日 - 1582年6月21日）は、日本の大名で、戦国時代の代表的な人物の一人である。日本の最初の「大統一者」と見なされている。
信長は強大な力を持つ織田家の当主で、1560年代に日本を統一するために他の大名との戦争を開始した。信長は最も強力な大名として台頭し、名目上の支配者であった将軍足利義昭を倒し、1573年に足利幕府を解散させた。1580年までに本州の大部分を征服し、1580年代には一向一揆の反乱軍を打ち破った。信長の支配は、革新的な軍事戦術、自由貿易の育成、日本の文政の改革、桃山歴史芸術時代の開始などで注目されたが、同時に、協力や屈服を拒否する人々を残忍に弾圧したことでも知られている。1582年の本能寺の変で、信長は家臣の明智光秀に京都で待ち伏せされ、切腹させられて死んだ。信長は豊臣秀吉に引き継がれ、豊臣秀吉は徳川家康とともに、まもなく天下統一を成し遂げる。
