古本屋の本棚に住み着いており酸素と湿気を糧にしている。
インクの匂いを好んでおり新しいものより古いインクを特に好む。
ただ古ければ良いというわけではないらしく、それぞれにあった良いワインを選ぶように好みが存在している。
振動や衝撃に弱く最悪死んでしまうこともある。死ぬと本に溶け込みシミとなってしまう。
オオタケシが多く住み着いている古本屋ほど本の質が良い為店主とは共生関係にあり、時折訪れるお客に対して愛想が悪いのはオオタケシを守っている為で決して機嫌が悪いというわけではない。体の大部分を占める模様は環境によって異なる為、模様を確認すると生息していた本屋がわかってしまう。オオタケシの写真を趣味にしているコレクターも多く今はなき名店に生息していたオオタケシの写真は高値で取引されている。
なおマナーを守らず勝手に撮影すると店主のオヤジに死ぬほど怒られるのでご注意を
