自分探しをする青年、盧生（ろせい）くんは旅に出ると、邯鄲の里につきます。そこの宿で、悟りを得られる枕を借りてひと眠りすることに。

気づくと盧生くんは、皇帝に招待され、輿（こし）に乗って宮殿へ。そのまま即位！　その後は華やかな王宮での暮らしが待っていました。
栄華をきわめ、やがて即位50年をむかえると、不老不死の薬をのみ、もうこれ以上のことはないと夢のような人生をきわめて舞を舞うのでした。

その時、宿の女主人がパンパンと盧生くんの枕元をはたき、ごはんが炊けましたよ、と起こします。
夢から覚めた盧生くんは、皇帝になった人生はすべて夢だったと気づきます。
人生とは、ごはんが炊けるあいだのひと眠りの夢。悟った盧生くんは帰っていきます。
