七月七日、たなばた祭りの夜。
近江国（滋賀県）関寺の僧は、稚児（ちご）たちを連れて、歌にくわしいという山の庵の老女をたずねます。
僧があれこれ尋ねるうち、話は小野小町の和歌に。すると老女はたいへんくわしく語り始め、自分がかつての絶世の美女・小野小町であったことを告白。
僧は百才の小町をともない関寺のたなばた祭りに戻りました。

稚児が舞を舞うのを見て、小町も舞いますが、足元がよろめき、むかしが恋しいと言って明け方になると元の庵へ戻って行きました。

牽牛と織女が年に一度だけ会えるたなばたの夜。天上の恋物語は不変ですが、地上では、栄華も若さも過ぎ去ります。さて、かつての恋多き老女は、星空になにを願ったのでしょう？
