能楽の中でも別格の曲で、古く儀式であった能楽の形をいまに伝えるといわれています。新年や祝賀能など、特別な機会にしか舞われません！

翁役の能楽師は、舞台上で白式尉（はくしきじょう）という笑みをたたえた白いおじいさんの面をかけます。翁は、天下泰平・国土安穏を祈ります。「とうとうたらりら」で始まる翁の祈りの言葉の意味はもはや失われているのですが、その清浄さと高貴さに圧倒されることでしょう。

続いて、狂言方が演じる三番叟（さんばそう）が「揉ノ段」を舞います。黒式尉（こくしきじょう）という黒く笑みをたたえたおじいさんの面をかけ、金色の鈴を持ち、「鈴ノ段」へ。
三番叟は鈴を地面に向かって、また観客に向かって振り、舞台上を飛んで、力強く地をふみかためていきます。このしぐさは農耕の豊作を祈っているとも考えられています。
世界の運行をになう神様のちからを改めて感じさせてもらえる曲です。

黒い翁は赤ちゃんをあやしている様子。老翁と新生児を、死と生のめぐりの象徴として描きました。
