その起源は中国、南派拳術の「詠春拳(えいしゅんけん)」で中国拳法の鍛錬行為で使用される格闘技鍛錬用設備。
現在も「詠春拳」やその派生「ジークンドー（JKD）」でも一人稽古の器具として使用される。
そして、少林寺に存在するという伝説の木人房のシルエットデザイン。
