涅槃とは、煩悩の火が消えた状態のことをいいます。
お釈迦様は生涯をかけて煩悩の火を消す道を説きました。
しかし、人は生きている限りその時々で煩悩が起こります。
そこで仏教では、
火は消したけれどまだ蝋燭が残っている状態を有余涅槃(うよねはん)＝生きている状態
火も消え、蝋燭も溶けてなくたった状態を無余涅槃(むよねはん）＝亡くなった状態
としました。
今回のデザインは、お釈迦様の御命日である二月十五日の涅槃会にちなんで、火が消えたあとの煙をイメージして「涅槃」、そしてインドの言葉であるニルヴァーナ（nirvana）と描きました。
両面にプリントがあるものは、前面を有余涅槃、背面が無余涅槃になるように異なるデザインとなっています。
