グランヴィル「動物たちの私生活・公生活」(フランス/1868年)より。
J.J.グランヴィル(1803-1847)は19世紀前期のフランスの挿絵画家。 19世紀パリの風刺画や独自の幻想画集などを精力的に発表したグランヴィルが得意としたイラストが「動物人間」です。
頭を動物に変えて人間を描くことで人間の本性を暴き出すこの画風は、19世紀のフランス人を典型的に描き出し、発表時には大きな成功を収めました。
的確な動物の描写といかにも人間臭い仕草が融合したこれらのキャラクターは、現代においても十二分に目を愉しませる奇想画の傑作として、近年再び人気が高まっています。
