山形県鶴岡市湯野浜海岸にある「波乗り発祥の浜」像です。
文献上では1821年にすでに子供が波で遊ぶ様子が書かれており、1900年になると板を使わず体のみで波に乗る「所謂湯野浜流波乗り」が完成したとのことです。
1965年秋、湯野浜にて日本海初のサーフィンが始まりました。
