あつしは、その容姿から人々に可愛がられているのに、束縛を嫌い自由なさすらいを求めてひとり旅に出た。
あつしがいなくなって飼い主はこの写真を町中にばら撒いて探していた。そのころすでに500マイルはなれたルイジアナの片田舎にいることもしらず。
小さな雑貨屋の前で日差しに焼かれながら考える。今夜の宿はどこにしようか。
その時、人間のガキが寄ってきた。ちょうど良い、水が飲みたい。尻尾なら振ってやる。そうだ水をよこせ。
気がつくと夕方だった。窓から西日が差し込んでいた。いつのまにか眠ってしまったらしい。ガキが上から覗き込んでいる。ああ、ここは、、このガキの家か。
あつしー！玄関から声がする。ワンワン（ママ！）とオレは叫ぶ。ママは子供と留守番してたことを褒めてくれた。
でもママ、あつしはまたひとりで脱走しちゃったんだよ！角の雑貨屋にいたけど。
